Some polyps will have a stalk like in the example above.

Polyps are growths that can occur anywhere in the bowels. When they occur in the colon as in the above picture, they can lead to colon cancer in 1 out of 16 people. If you remove polyps by colonoscopy you decrease the future risk of colon cancer by up to 80-90%.

Polyps on a stalk can be grabbed with a snare (a wire loop) and removed. In the picture the stalk of the polyp has been grabbed by the snare.

The polyp has been removed leaving the cauterized (burned) stump. This will heal with little or no scarring

Sometimes when the colon heals a small scar will be left marked by a whitish scar.
INDIA INK MARK INDIA INK MARK
Here India Ink (a black stain) has been injected underneath the surface of the colon to mark where a polyp has been removed. This allows the Doctor or Surgeon to find this spot in the future by finding the tattoo left behind.
